The Ultimate book on the Anasazi or the Old Ones, or the Ancient Puebloans--whatever you prefer. The author is no stranger to writing regarding the southwest, and takes on the four corners with a vengence. He hikes, climbs, solos, does a foray into a technical canyon with Jon Krakauer (Into Thin Air) and seeks out ruins and remains both well known and little known. Along the way he uncovers a pot or two, some signatures with Fred Blackburns help (Cowboys and Cavedwellers) , and a basket from the basketmaker era.

He covers some archaelogical history, touching on Wetherill and others, of course the old ones themselves, and more recent native americans who state the Anasazi didn't go anywhere--"they are right here".

It is well written and cohesive despite covering a lot of territory--the theme is the same--the love and appreciation of a native culture in our western past, which continues to influence some of us today.

A touchstone book--published by Simon and Schuster in 1999. I have seen copies of this at REI.
